“I am currently wetting my pants!”

“And the Winner Is…” was a vast improvement over last week’s love-traingle-centric episode, and it seems like Korra and her companions finally have a mission to focus on.  Even Tenzin understands that war has come to Republic City, as Amon and his miscreants attempt to destroy everything that Avatar Aang stood for.  Speaking of the old Avatar troupe, how cool was it seeing older versions of Toph and Aang?  These visions that Korra’s been receiving are still vague, yet it appears that Toph and Aang had some kind of disagreement in the past.  There are several theories floating around the web about what the significance of her visions are, but I’d like to know what you all think?  Why is Korra seeing these images now, and do they point to the origins of Amon and his hatred of benders?

One of the aspects of this episode that I enjoyed the most, was the final battle between Amon, Korra and Chief Lin Beifong.  It was interesting to discover that her hatred of Amon is as strong as Korra’s.  Chief Beifong never vocalizes her feelings directly, but you can tell by the way she fights and how after Korra nearly fell to her death, she considered pursing Amon alone.  Fortunately, she chose to save Korra in one of the best action sequences I’ve seen in an animated television show.  As some of you already know, I’m currently making my way through season two of Avatar: The Last Airbender, and I’ve been fascinated with the differences between Aang and Korra as the season progresses.  When Aang first discovers how to fire bend, he is reluctant after hurting Katara, yet Korra is much different.  Have you noticed how violently she uses fire, and with such reckless abandon?  Part of Aang resides in Korra, but she is not as gentle hearted as he was.  For those of you who’ve seen the original series, do you think that Korra’s visions are due to her ability to tap into the spirit world?  I hope we learn sooner than later what these glimpses into the past signify.  Let me know your thoughts and theories in the comments section below.

“Blood is thicker than seawater”

In last week’s episode of Young Justice I was worried that M’gann had gone dark side, but it seems like Aqualad has taken the word “dark” to a whole other level, by abandoning the team completely.  Again, in a very subtle way we’re learning more about the mystery of what has transpired over the past five years.  It was sad to hear about Aqualad’s old girlfriend dying on a mission, and I couldn’t help but wonder how awesome it would have been to watch Aquagirl in action with the rest of the team.  For those of you who are DC Comics aficionados, you’ll remember another version of Aqualad named Jackson Hyde from the “Brightest Day” series written by Geoff Johns and penciled by Ivan Reis.  Hyde first appeared in issue #4, and we soon learned that his father was indeed Black Manta.  I think it’s cool that Young Justice is following the stories from the comic books, even after DC’s relaunch last year.  Some of you had fears that the character development from season one would suffer, due to the five-year gap between seasons.  Have your fears subsided after the first three episodes, or do you feel that there are too many characters?  Personally, I hope the writers give us more backstory on Kaldur.  Going from a strong team leader, to working alongside one of the most dangerous villains in the DC Universe is a huge leap, and I want to see how it all took place, and not just hear about it through conversations.

I still want to discuss Miss Marian’s lobotomizing/interrogation techniques, which she uses again in this episode.  It was a small scene, but just seeing the shock on Connor’s face said it all.  The sweet little “Hello, Megan” girl he knew no longer exists.  What also interests me about the scene was that Superboy was the only one who seemed to care.  I guess that makes sense, because we all know that Bruce has a bit of a dark side to him.  I hope you all don’t think I’m thrashing M’gann, because she’s trying to protect Earth from an alien invasion, so if poking around someone’s mind is what she has to do, then so be it.  These are the morally ambiguous choices that make good storytelling so much fun to watch, just check out a show like HBO’s Game of Thrones and you’ll know what I’m talking about.  Speaking of brainwashing, if you’re interested in reading a good comic book series that deals with similar issues, then check out  ”Identity Crisis,” written by NY Times best-selling author Brad Metzler.  All I’ll say is that moral ambiguity reigns supreme in that 7-issue miniseries.

In closing I’d like mention the exciting battle between the Justice League, the Kroloteans and Black Manta’s forces.  Did any of you notice the improved camaraderie between Superboy and Superman?  Watching the two of them fight as a team was highly entertaining.  Another memorable moment was when Wonder Girl was enraptured by Princess Diana’s fighting style only to hear her mentor say, “A little less fan girl, and a little more Wonder Girl.”  Even with the large time gaps between seasons, this has been an enjoyable start for Young Justice and I hope it continues to get better with each new episode.  Let me know what you thought of “Alienated” in the comments section below.

Downes steps in as Manchester Black, leader of The Elite. David Kaufman (Justice League: Doom) also reprises his Justice League TV series role as Jimmy Olsen.  The film is directed by Michael Chang (Batman: Brave and the Bold).  Bruce Timm (Batman: Year One) is executive producer, and Alan Burnett (Green Lantern: Emerald Knights) is producer.

Dinosaurs vs. Aliens - Story by Grant Morrison & Barry Sonnenfeld / Art by Mukesh Singh

Don’t let the title fool you, Dinosaurs vs. Aliens is an enjoyable action-adventure story that left me wanting more, and Singh’s art is superb.  From the creator of the ‘Men in Black’ franchise (Barry Sonnenfeld), comes a tale of an alien race who has been searching the galaxy for centuries, looking for a new home.  As you can imagine, that new home is Earth, but it’s set in the time of dinosaurs, so I’ll be curious to see how these extraterrestrials interact with the indigenous population.  This FCBD edition is not a complete issue, but it does have a nice artist sketchbook in the back that’s worth checking out.  There’s no denying that Mr. Singh has talent, but I wonder how well the story will hold up over several issues.  The teaser that we get in this comic was enough to bring me back, but what about you?  Does the idea of dinosaurs clashing with aliens seem too absurd, or will the writing prowess of Grant Morrison (Final Crisis, Batman & Robin) be enough for you to give it a chance?

The New 52 #1 – Story by Geoff Johns / Art by Jim Lee, Ivan Reis, Kenneth Rocafort & Gene Ha

This was the most surprising book in my stash, due to my lack of enthusiasm for the current Justice League book being written by Geoff Johns.  The New 52 is quite possibly the best JL story I’ve read since the relaunch.  If you checked out the Flashpoint miniseries, then you’ll remember a character called Pandora, who is a hooded woman that randomly appears in various issues throughout the New 52.  I assumed that she would serve a purpose for a future event that would crossover the entire DC Universe.  Well, in this issue we find out that next year the first big event will be called “Trinity War.”  The origin of this name comes from Pandora’s mysterious past, when she was cursed to walk the Earth alone for eternity, separated from her two comrades who were also punished.  If there’s anyway for you to get a hold of The New 52 #1 then I encourage you to do so.  There’s mystery, action and suspense, which is what I love about stories from the Justice League and I’m sorely missing those elements in the current issues.  Hopefully the “Trinity War” will be an improvement, and if this issue is any indication, then there’s a good chance we’ll be in for a fun ride in 2013.

Now that we’ve talked about romance, how about we focus on some Pro Bending?  I’ve heard from some individuals that this sport feels too much like a version of Quidditch from the Harry Potter franchise, but I’m not sure if that’s an accurate assessment.  Quidditch has a much different style, and if anything, Pro Bending feels more like an extreme version of dodgeball.  With that being said, I found the tournament to be extremely enjoyable and I can’t wait to see how the Fire Ferrets perform in the finals next week.  Would you buy tickets to see a bending competition, or is it a poor excuse for a sport?

I know I spent a lot of time during this review covering the love story, but as the name of this episode suggests, “The Spirit of Competition” is a dangerous place, where friendships can be destroyed and hearts broken.  I don’t mean to be overly dramatic, but think back to your teen years.  Were relationships this awkward among friends, or is the Legend of Korra dangerously teetering on the edge of a cliche?  As always, let me know what you thought of this week’s episode in the comments section below.

“Kid, you may just change my mind about monkeys yet!”

In an effort to discover more information on Earth’s alien invaders, Superboy, Miss Martian, Beast Boy and Adam Strange travel to the distant planet of Rann.  For those of you who were worried that the character development would suffer due to an influx of new superheroes, I think you can put your fears to rest.  Even though we didn’t see Aqualad, Kid Flash, Artemis or Roy for the second week in a row, it was nice to get the backstory on Conner and M’gann.  Apparently Superboy was the one who ended their relationship, but why?  He claimed that “she left him no choice,” but does that have anything to do with her darker impulses as a White Martian?  Watching her lobotomize a Krolotean and then turn around to give her adopted brother a souvenir with a smile on her face was haunting.  Has Miss Martian gone completely dark side, or is she just doing what needs to be done?  Conner has some of Superman’s DNA inside him, so like Kal-El, killing is not in his nature (except for his Lex Luthor half).  It’s early in the season, but M’gann’s story is already shaping up to be one of the most interesting arcs in the group.  How do you see her character developing as the season progresses?

The surprise hero for me in “Earthlings” was Beast Boy.  In last week’s premier I had no idea who he was, but the writers did an excellent job by giving us a small glimpse into his past.  We discover that Queen Bee killed his mom in some kind of car accident, and now M’gann is his adopted sister.  I assumed that he was indeed a “Beast Boy,” but it seems like that’s the characteristic he’d decided to mimic.  Garfield is a Martian, but his exact origins are still unclear.  How long was he on earth, and why did he choose the form of a beast instead of a normal looking kid like Miss Martian?  All these questions are what keep me coming back for more Young Justice, and like I said in my review of last week’s episode, I have faith that the writers are going to slowly build these character’s backstories like they did in season one.  What are your thoughts on “Earthlings?”

Swamp Thing # 9 – Story by Scott Snyder / Art by Yanick Paquette & Marco Rudy

When you think about what actually makes a good comic book everyone will tell you something different.  Some will say that art is the decider, while others will stress the importance of story.  For me, comic books are at their best when both story and art come together to tell a unique and interesting tale.  Illustrations are stories too, so for the words to have any power within the comic book medium, they need to be accompanied by quality art.  Scott Snyder and Yanick Paquette have found that harmonious balance in Swamp Thing, and like I’ve said in our Ink Hero segments, the elements of visceral horror and beauty mold into an intriguing plot with excellent storytelling from Snyder.  If there is such a thing as a “comic book in its purest form,” then for me, it’s Swamp Thing.  I realize that everyone will have differing opinions on this matter, so I would love to see what your favorite book is, when it comes to great fiction and art working together to tell as story?

Ultimate Spider-Man #10 – Story by Brian Michael Bendis / Art by David Marquez

I’m sure I sound like a broken record by now, as I’ve suggested nearly every month that you should all be reading this Eisner nominated book by the talented Brian Michael Bendis (The Avengers).  If there is one downfall to this series, it’s that the artists keep changing on a monthly basis, but David Marquez is a talented penciler, so I’m looking forward to seeing his work in this month’s issue.  Over the last few books Miles’ uncle, The Prowler, has discovered that his nephew is indeed the new Spider-Men.  I’m excited to see how this confrontation will go down, and how Miles will react to uncovering the truth about who is Uncle really is.  The Prowler isn’t the evilest of all the villains, but I wouldn’t call him a hero either.  Will Miles side with his uncle, or will they become enemies?  As always, let me know what you think of this week’s picks, and be sure to look for Lauren and I later this week on our Ink Hero segment.

-Synopsis: In the year 1752, Joshua and Naomi Collins, with young son Barnabas, set sail from Liverpool, England to start a new life in America. But even an ocean was not enough to escape the mysterious curse that has plagued their family. Two decades pass and Barnabas (Johnny Depp) has the world at his feet–or at least the town of Collinsport, Maine. The master of Collinwood Manor, Barnabas is rich, powerful and an inveterate playboy…until he makes the grave mistake of breaking the heart of Angelique Bouchard (Eva Green). A witch, in every sense of the word, Angelique dooms him to a fate worse than death: turning him into a vampire, and then burying him alive. Two centuries later, Barnabas is inadvertently freed from his tomb and emerges into the very changed world of 1972. He returns to Collinwood Manor to find that his once-grand estate has fallen into ruin.

The dysfunctional remnants of the Collins family have fared little better, each harboring their own dark secrets. Matriarch Elizabeth Collins Stoddard (Michelle Pfeiffer) has called upon live-in psychiatrist, Dr. Julia Hoffman (Helena Bonham Carter), to help with her family troubles. Also residing in the manor is Elizabeth’s ne’er-do-well brother, Roger Collins, (Jonny Lee Miller); her rebellious teenage daughter Carolyn Stoddard (Chloe Moretz); and Roger’s precocious 10-year-old son, David Collins (Gulliver McGrath). The mystery extends beyond the family, to caretaker Willie Loomis, played by Jackie Earle Haley, and David’s new nanny, Victoria Winters, played by Bella Heathcote.
