For a movie costing nearly $200 million, I find it interesting that we haven’t heard much about it in the last few months. Batman, Spider-Man, The Avengers, and Prometheus have all made their films known to the public, but what about ‘Total Recall?’ Why has this behemoth remained silent until now? Well, in typical summer blockbuster fashion, the studio has released a teaser for the teaser trailer that will premier this Sunday. The footage doesn’t reveal much about the plot, but you can see that the large production costs have gone to good use, and it’s hard to deny the beautiful special effects. For those of you who’ve seen the original movie starring Arnold, are you happy about a new interpretation? ’Total Recall’ will be released on August 3, 2012.
-Synopsis: Total Recall is an action thriller about reality and memory, inspired anew by the famous short story “We Can Remember It For You Wholesale” by Philip K. Dick. Welcome to Rekall, the company that can turn your dreams into real memories. For a factory worker named Douglas Quaid (Colin Farrell), even though he’s got a beautiful wife (Kate Beckinsale) who he loves, the mind-trip sounds like the perfect vacation from his frustrating life – real memories of life as a super-spy might be just what he needs. But when the procedure goes horribly wrong, Quaid becomes a hunted man. Finding himself on the run from the police – controlled by Chancellor Cohaagen (Bryan Cranston), the leader of the free world – Quaid teams up with a rebel fighter (Jessica Biel) to find the head of the underground resistance (Bill Nighy) and stop Cohaagen. The line between fantasy and reality gets blurred and the fate of his world hangs in the balance as Quaid discovers his true identity, his true love, and his true fate.

I watched Verhoeven's one on Blu-ray recently and was shocked at how much everything looked like it had been made out of toilet roll tubes and egg boxes! The story never gets old, unlike the effects so this could be great.
I'm afraid and also pretty sure all the humor and satire will be sucked out of the reboot. That kind of intelligent humor found in Total Recall, Robocop and my favorite Verhoeven movie Starship Troopers is rarely found in today's big budget movies.

I really don't care if this will be more like P.K. Dick's novel, I love Verhoeven's version (it's one of my favourite movies). Just because you don't follow the source material closely doesn't mean you're making an inferior film. Look at the Shining. Kubrick's movie is a horror masterpiece, the TV remake which was much closer to King's book, was garbage. What works in a book doesn't have to work on film.
