I like how Andy Serkis keeps biting people's fingers off in all these great movies. He was amazing. I loved RotPotA!
I agreed with Dennis the previews were cheesy. You review convince me that I need to run like a ape and check this one out.
Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes is my favorite movie this summer and I seen all the blockbusters this summer. This is how you make a movie.
I disagree regarding the one dimensional nature of the "bad guys".
As one of the blond women suggest (I cannot tell them apart), James Franco's character is the primary adversary of this motion picture. RISE borrows brilliantly from many classic sci-fi tales, not the least of which is FRANKENSTEIN. The relationship between Caesar and his mad-scientist guardian is as complex as the relationship between Frankenstein and his monster, a loving father-son relationship doomed to fail because it was birthed in the context of scientific aberration. Caesar is a bad ass Che Guevara Frankenstein.
The other "villains" are simply abusive dicks who mistreat animals, but Franco's villainous character will, if not singlehandedly, end humanity as we know it._
I will go and see it this month. One common criticism I have heard, and I agree with it, it that the trailer gives away too much of the story. I pretty much already know what is going to happen – start, middle and end of the story.
I found the scenes with Tom Felton's character to be self consciously similar to the mistreatment of John Merrick by the night porter in David Lynch's 'The Elephant Man'. These scenes had a heightened emotional impact for me as I was not only involved with Caesars journey but also reminded of the emotions stirred up by Lynch's masterpiece.
Just saw it. Best movie of summer 2011
The first thing I said before this move started, was "get ready to hate the human race" and I wasn't proven wrong. As with these types of movies, POA, shows how humans think they are superior to every other race/species, until proven otherwise.
Anyone familiar with this franchise (you don't have to be , to enjoy this movie) knows whats gonna happen , but it doesn't stop you from liking this story. The special effects are REALLY well done as most times, I couldn't tell and sometimes forgot, that I was looking at CGI apes. Andy Serkis knocks it out of the park as Cesar, the ape who started it all. Andy also did the 'movements' for Gollum/Smeagle and King Kong, and once again he connects us with the characters and make us root for them. Pacing was smooth, Story was solid and I look forward to part 2 (let the credits roll).
The down side: Sorry to say , but it was the HUMAN actors who really dropped the ball. James Franco is fun to watch in most films, but he just doesn't have what it takes, to make us sympathetic towards his character and his goals. I don't know if the rolls were poorly written , but the human actors (with the exception of John Lithgow as James' Father) were two dimensional and came across as selfish and cowardly. The crowd i saw this with, were rooting for the apes the entire movie.
I would definitely recommend this as a movie to watch. It's not for everyone but it was by no means a bad movie. 4 out of 5.
