Not a big Duff fan, but with that said; I think she has a look that could work. I'm not gonna hate on her for trying something new, unless she screws this up. The biggest reason is because I like the direction they are taking Spider-Man in this one. I'm tired of the Mary Jane storyline being used over & over again with no real progression. I would be different if they had taken the relationship to the marriage level before this reboot.
I see your point about casting an unknown as Gwen Stacy or whatever romantic lead they decide to go with. If they casted someone with a name or well known, they might overshadow Andrew Garfield who is relatively unknown (perhaps after The Social Network he'll be more popular?).
Most of my Spider-Man comic book reading has involved Peter Parker and Mary Jane, however Gwen Stacy was supposed to be Parker's college sweetheart and therefore if this reboot is his younger days, perhaps it should be her or someone new. Originally Peter Parker doesn't meet Mary Jane until after Gwen.
