Dominic Cooper, while giving an interview with Salon, stated in an off-the-cuff remark that he would be playing the young Howard Stark in Marvel Studio’s upcoming Captain America: The First Avenger. Howard Stark was played by Gerard Williams in the first Iron Man and by John Slattery in it’s sequel.

As we saw in Iron Man 2, Howard Stark was either instrumental in the creation of or worked closely with S.H.I.E.L.D. This resulted in Tony Stark having Captain America’s shield in his lab, presumably. I’ve only seen Cooper’s small role in An Education, but his personality and charisma sparked immediately. [A fun sidenote: his co-star in that film, Peter Sarsgaard, is now Hector Hammond in Green Lantern.]

After Thor, this is the next big push in the Marvel universe and they seem to be packing the shit out of it. Alongside Nick Fury will be his team of Howling Commandos, in what is sure to be Fury’s origin and setup for S.H.I.E.L.D. If that wasn’t enough, fighting alongside Captain America and Bucky will be WWII super-team, The Invaders.

Captain America: The First Avenger is being directed by Joe Johnston from a script by David Self, Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. The film stars Chris Evans as Steve Rogers/Captain America, Hugo Weaving as Red Skull, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, Toby Jones as Arnim Zola, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, and Hayley Atwell as Peggy Carter.
