Watch me and Roth’s review of the latest Caprica episode “Reins Of A Waterfall”. After the strong start from the pilot episode and follow up, the series has turned for the worse. I hope that this is a momentary lapse and the next episode goes back to what the potential of what the first couple episodes were promising.

Do you guys have any idea how bad the hosts are on here? Especially the bleached-blonde wannabe…
::finds the will to not say anything:: . . . . oh, crap.
I agree with you on most of the flaws of the show but my biggest disagreement is that the show is getting worse. I wasn’t as impressed with the pilot as you so I’m not as disappointed with the subsequent episodes. They are definitely changing the characters inexplicably which is poor writing. The acting continues to be stellar but the script still hasn’t delivered for me. I actually liked this episode the best so far but I’m still just giving it a chance – not loving it. I liked that they concentrated on the virtual Zoe rather than the annoying cross cutting between the robot and Zoe in the real world. Regardless of why they do it, it has the effect of taking me out of the story and noticing the editing instead which is never a good thing. I think Zoe, Tammy, and Zoe’s best friend (not a good sign that I can’t remember her name!) have the most interesting story and I think that is where they should go with the show. I want to know where Tammy went, what she is doing out there in the virtual world, will she eventually understand what she is?
? I have zero interest Sister Creepola though at least the students find her as creepy as the audience does. The writers don’t expect us to believe that anyone would be fooled into trusting her. I hope Amanda does get wacked – that is how little I care for her. The biggest problem I have with her isn’t so much what she did but how completely unexplained it was. The writers haven’t even tried to get us to understand why she would do that – why anyone would. Same for the SOTO, what do they want? They need to at least tell us that they are oppressed somewhere. It was clear on BSG and Caprica that there are the haves and have nots in the 12 colonies with Caprica being the top arrogant colony but no mention how the SOTO fit into that.
To me, the whole Amanda getting whacked makes no sense in the context of Joseph's character. Before they were making it like he was conflicted man who lived in a morally grey area, but now it's like he's a mob boss calling shots, which makes him and the show seem much more shallow.
Dennis
Hey Elizabeth!
Yeah I think there needs to be more context given to SOTO as well. And yes I hope more character development comes into play.
Thanks for commenting!

Soooo I'm with you guys. This episode felt like a completely different show. Hardly any action that any character made any sense from what had already been established in the first two episodes. The only thing the actions acomplished was to add drama.
I really didn't like the Pat Oswalt (no offense to the actor himself whom I do think is funny) character. It seems like they were just telling the audience "Hey this guy is just like Jon Steward!" I remember the line specifically about a large percentage of college age students getting their news from him, a fact that is true about Steward.
And just like ya'll said, when did Daddy Adama suddenly become a mob guy? He didn't seem like the kind of guy who would bride a judge, or order a hit, or beat up a guy at all and yet here he is doing it all like it's the norm. No guilt, no second thoughts.
I really hope this isn't how the show will be from now on because the first two episodes were really well done, please don't been another "Flash Forward" that starts out promising then just falls on it's face.
Yeah Oswalt's character was out of place, made me think too much about him as a personality in our world. They should have gotten someone else.
Joseph Adama didn't seem the type that was all into the Tauron mob world but now they make it seem like he's running the operation, where did that come from?
I have a feeling that Caprica, Flash Forward, and V are going to be canceled this year.
- Dennis
I entirely agree. I don't feel like any of those shows have proven themselves strong enough to maintain a second season.
V was just awful.
Flashforward started really strong and then just sort of deteriorated into General Hospital.
And well, we all know where I stand with Caprica.
On a side note that has nothing to do with Caprica, but is me saying something nice about something else, Spartacus Blood and Sand is actually forming up to be a half decent show (literally half decent). Going to win awards? Not unless the entire panel handing out the awards consists of 13 year old boys who haven't seen a girl yet, but aside from the copious amounts of violence and nudity I am actually finding myself a bit drawn into the characters.
It's very much an adult series (Xena has sex and gets naked more times than I ever thought she would), but the main characters are forming into a story that interests me. Obviously thrown together with the lowest budget Starz could manage for a tax right off, it has a startling number of B list actors (hey that payroll adds up) and actually the talent isnt all that bad.
The second and third episodes were not so great, but the pilot and fourth episodes were much better.
Maybe it's some kind of new writing technique used by TV writers, they start strong, bottom out almost immediately and then slowly pick up the pieces with whatever viewership they haven't chased off yet?
It's funny you say that about Spartacus, because the way you feel about Caprica is the way I feel about that show. One of the lead girls was in my friend's independent movie and so I was rooting for it to be good but I found it to be a mess. I only watched the first episode, so perhaps it has gotten better.

Agreed – maybe Thinkhero should stick a DONATE NOW for Sci Fi writers workshops in LA.
Some of the stuff going on TV defies any Creative Writing/Screenwriting 101 class. For character and plot development the audience needs to get a sense, somehow understand, where the twists and turns come from, even crazy-ass surprises need to make sense within the world created. How do they make sense, why that's the art of story-telling. This is not an an abstract art house movie, please writers, even in Sci Fi, follow logical progressions and related behavior.
It's like you can't just have Snow White butcher the seven dwarfs in the second act without some foreshadowing or tag in with the characters already demonstrated behavior. Sure Amanda can do that to her daughter but set-up she has like a split personality, is really mentally unstable, something to give it context. Adama now just ordering hits, this doesn't relate to the character set-up. Graystone is just a little down and not really that upset at his wife who just slandered their and daughter killed his ability to meet mortgage payments on their palace (assuming Caprica is that similar a capitalist society, I mean they have a Jon Stewart act alike, so it might as well be Earth.)
It seems lately in TV the production team is just too eager to get to where they want to go and and ask the writers to just string together loosely related plot devices instead of trying to develop an actual story. You need more than just a good idea for a series. Just a good idea is a pilot and nothing more. Yes, this episode was a downturn in quality, and I will give Caprica three more episodes to redemption.
I hope Caprica can recover tonight. It has the potential to be a good show, but they have to move the storyline faster – the writers need to write the story as if it was just one season – one short season.
Going to watch latest Caprica episode soon, I heard it wasn't good. Considering the shows ratings I don't expect this show to last very long.

There were several good moments in episode 4 but I’m still not loving it. I’ll wait for your review to say more.
It isn’t a good sign when you are ‘still giving it a chance’ and ‘waiting for it to get better’ which is where I am. I saw the promo for episode 5 last night and it looked good but that is what a promo is for. I’m very interested to see what your thoughts on episode 4 are.
Having seen both episode 4 and 5 now, I’m guessing that you’ll be disappointed in episode 4 as I was. However, I’m really excited to hear if you see the same improvement I saw in episode 5. It was a real turning point in the series and I finally care about what happens next.
phew, it has climbed its way back – some really interesting things going on in 5!
