Vulture from New York Entertainment has reported that Sony has decided on their new director to take over not just the Spider-Man reboot, but a trilogy of movies for the franchise. Marc Webb (director of 500 Days of Summer) will be taking over the reigns as opposed to the rumored front runner Nimrod Antal (director of the upcoming Predators).
Part of the reason, Vulture reports:
“Webb’s other big appeal? He’s much cheaper than the old Spider-Man crew. The deal just now being sewn up calls for Webb to be paid roughly $10 million for the first film, with substantial bonuses built in if the picture reaches certain box-office milestones. ”
What do you guys think of this selection? I personally am very happy with it, and it Webb can bring Joseph Gordon Levitt somehow, I will be even more enthusiastic.

Vulture Exclusive: Sony Offers (500) Days of Summer Director Marc Webb the Next Three Spider-Mans — Vulture http://nymag.com/daily/entertainment/2010/01/marc_webb_new_director_of_spid.html#ixzz0d6eI4sXi

Joseph Gordon Levitt could be a very believable Peter Parker as opposed to the buzz of Robert Pattinson being Peter… And about Webb, I think it's a very smart choice for the reboot… my only concern is: Will it be "dark" like Batman? or more comic book-like, with a happy Peter, always trying to see the good side of everything?
I liked a lot the first two movies directed by Sam Raimi, the third… well, not my favorite… but (maybe just for me) it lacked of that funny side of Peter Parker.
Anyways… I'm somehow happy about this and I only hope they bring something fresh to the franchise
If they get Jospeh Gordon Levitt, I can see it being more dark and gritty. But if they go with a Robert Pattison-type or Jim Sturgess, then they are going the teen heart throb route and it will be more angsty then dark.
Dennis
That's all we need now, sparkling vampires.
Brian
The strange thing about his age is that they also are throwing around Jim Sturgess's name and both he and JGL are the same age. They both have young looking faces and could pull it off, if they say he's a senior in high school or do a college based version.
Sony doesn't really plan on destroying the franchise, they want to make money, which sometimes leads to bad creative decisions that lead to destroying the franchise. To say they make plans is giving them too much credit in that department, hahaha
Dennis
I'm thinking they'll most likely go with an unknown who actually looks like he's in high school, possibly a freshmen. I would rather see Peter Parker in high school for a few films rather than watch the same story over again. I mean Raimi touched on that subject in the first film and if they told that story again, I'd really hesitate about watching the second film.
As for Sony ruining things, I know they have the best intentions that make the most money but man they sure can suck up a decent film. As of right now, the reboot doesn't look good but I'll stay optimistic for awhile at least.
Their choice of Marc Webb has given me some confidence, the question is, how much control are they going to give him? Or are they going to mess things up by adding too many villains or interfere in the casting decisions?
Dennis
See, now you're thinking. Of course Sony's going to interfere with Webb's decision making process. Of course they're going to add tons of villains and make it similar to spider-man 3. All hope is gone, all we can look forward to is a cool fight scene in a possible 3-D.
The budget is a fraction of Raimi's budget ($80 million vs. Raimi's $150 million) so that's good. Keeping the money down gives the director more vocal input. Once you hit $100 million that's when suits think they know more than people who've actually been making films for years.
I hope Sony pays attention to the audience. The consensus seems to be that everyone will be fine with another Spider-Man as long as it's not a ground-up origin story again.
Brian
I really wouldn't mind seeing Gordon-Levitt but his age is a factor in this decision. He's said in the past that he's very honored to be mentioned as a candidate for Peter Parker but I'm not sold just yet.
By the way, I especially wouldn't want him around if Sony plans to destroy everything good about Spider-man with this reboot.
