Check out our video review of the disappointing vampire movie Daybreakers. Both me and Roth were really looking forward to this movie, and it starts off pretty good but ends up going to a predictable and unsatisfying ending.  What did you guys think of the movie?

    WOWZERS… i completely agree with you guys…

This movie couldn't decide on which of 3 different movies it wanted to be, and because of that it epically annoyed me and lost my interest. I am not pissed off about wasting money on it, i am pissed off because they wasted a great idea on this.

It could've been (as you said) a kick ass action flick, a great dark thriller with a vibe that could've been like Dark City, or it could've gone the epic comedy route a la Shaun of the Dead/Zombieland. The wasted potential of a great cast and a great idea is a crime… and depressing, but luckily we are in a day and age where people don't wait any amount of time anymore to reboot a franchise or to remake a flick, so maybe by 2012 we will get the movie that we should've gotten the first time.

Yeah, I'm also more upset about it wasting a realy cool premise and setup with a very strange climax and cheesy scenes (vampire grabbing the girl at the end into the room).

If the movie makes a decent amount of money, I could see a sequel coming, which hopefully will be a lot better.

I, for one, hope there's no sequel since the ending pretty much will make it unnecessary. I think you two hit it right on the nose about the film seeming to want to be three different things at once. When I think about it now Del Toro had a similar idea which he pulled off quite well in Blade II. He explained enough to let the audience know the danger of the Reapers and why two factions had to join up then from there went all gory comic book on the audience.

The Spierig Brothers' eyes were bigger than their stomach, so to speak, when they wrote up their script. As I pointed out on my own review and subsequent rant, it seemed like they wanted to make a kick-ass vampire flick but also wanted to proselytize about how human blood is like oil and how the rich soon became like the poor (yuppie vamps turning into Subsiders) because the overinvested. I was half-expecting them to put in some sort of gay marriage allegory in there by the midway point.

I think the Spierig Brothers could've really helped themselves to have someone come in, look over the script and, at the very least, make some suggestions on what should be cut out and/or explained a bit further. I also don't think the budget, as low as it was compared to most such high-minded action/horror, is an excuse. Blomkamp did a film that looked like it cost 100million or more for slightly more than what the Spierig's had to work with.

Yeah, disappointment all-around, especially for me since I've been following the Brothers since their days on Undead. Even that one had some big flaws, but they at least had a kick-ass action-zombie movie to make things entertaining.

I loved this movie and your review just totally ruined it for me haha. I'd still own this movie on dvd over Avatar.

    Hey fejmanz!

Thanks! Yes that is the piece that bothered me the most. I like when movies mix genres or bend them (like Tarrentino does) but it takes real finesse to do it and it just didn't come through on this one. And yes it was a really great idea – perhaps someone else can and will take it to where it could have gone.

    Thanks for commenting!

Agreed – you know I just feel like it needed a more cohesive feel. I get how they might want to combine all those elements – but it just didn't come together in a cohesive fashion for me. I'd like to check out their earlier film.

    Thanks for commenting!

Oh – well don't let us ruin it! You know different strokes for different …etc. This one just didn't work for me – but if you had a good time with it – that's great! Thanks for commenting!

Undead is actually a fun little zombie movie. When I look back on it now I actually thought they did a better job focusing on what they wanted to do with that film than in Daybreakers.

It didn't ruin it for me as much as you guys put it into perspective for me with your review. I think watching your review, with all your legit criticisms of the movie, has made it more thought provoking for me.

Anyways, always look forward to your reviews (waiting for your review on the new episode of Fringe!) and have a good weekend!
