‘Zombieland’ Writers Pen ‘Deadpool’

Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick are set to pen Fox’s upcoming Deadpool for Fox. Ryan Reynolds originally played the character in last year’s horrible Wolverine debacle, and was quite frankly one of the only good things about it. Reynolds is funny as hell; there’s no doubt about that. Hopefully Reese and Wernick can infuse Deadpool with the same character work they gave to Woody Harrelson’s Tennessee in Zombieland. But who knows? Fox sucks. A lot.

Reynolds is currently bulking up to begin shooting Green Lantern next month (via Slashfilm). There’s no official start date, or director for that matter, for Deadpool but Reynolds has an opening and will already be in shape after filming wraps on Lantern. There’s a possibility he’ll go straight into it if Fox can get everything in order in that time frame. I hope the film’s got some teeth and doesn’t wuss out. My favorite take on the character was written by Warren Ellis during his run on Thunderbolts, and while I had problems with Zombieland I loved Woody Harrelson’s character. Deadpool is known for breaking the fourth wall and Reynolds previously stated he would, so I hope Reese and Wernick have a lot of fun with that.

As a huge Deadpool junkie.. this gives me more joy then I know what to do with. When I first started talking about directors, someone told me they might want to take a shot at it, and I tooootally saw it. I didn't know it was confirmed though. The Wolverine movie was a disappointment, but, he was wicked. He was funny, but it just drove me crazy how he wasn't full on Deadpool. Like, Wade's funny, but he didn't get crazy until after he became Deadpool. He's not even a mutant, he was just an assassin. The movie changed him sooo much. To a point where he just had a bit of Deadpool's really campish, imature humor (which is awesome, not an insult), and the name. But that was it, they 100% changed his origin, how he knew everyone, ect. From the interviews I read with writers though they said they were going to try and reboot, or bring some of his original origins into the movie. Maybe replace his cancer with the weird 'Pool of Powers' thing. Anyway. I could go on about him for hooours.

But Zomebieland had a good feel, a very Deadpoolish feel. So my hope in the Deadpool movie and possibly franchise has been restored. He really does deserve some kind of movie for what they did to him in Wolverine. T-T Here's hoping Fox doesn't screw us, or characters we love again.
