‘GI Joe 2′ Moves Forward

GI Joe 2 is moving into production with Zombieland screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick unofficially tapped to pen the sequel. The film grossed over $300 million dollars, and was actually quite a bit of fun albeit one of the stupidest movies ever made. Even with Stephen Sommers mediocre directing, it still somehow managed to be a hell of a lot more interesting than anything happening in Transformers 2.
While the first film has serious problems (that horrible screenplay mainly), there is an opportunity here to do something better with the franchise. I’m still out on Reese and Wernick’s talent, but they’ve been able to craft some pretty solid comedic moments. Can they really script an action movie, though? I guess we’ll see. The two writers are in heavy demand right now. They turned in a draft of Venom last year, and were announced today as the writers on the upcoming Deadpool spin-off. No word yet on whether Sommers will be back to helm the sequel.
IESB is still waiting on confirmation on the writers, but the film is definitely moving ahead. Now, if they could only get Channing Tatum to be a better actor…
