Sam Mendes Set To Direct ‘Bond 23′

Sam Mendes (American Beauty, Jarhead) has been announced as the director of the latest Bond movie which is still currently untitled. Mendes hails from a dramatic background which I think is especially good for the next Bond film. After the incomprehensible and nauseating action sequences in Marc Forster’s Quantum Of Solace, I think a bit of restraint is needed to get the franchise back on the track that was started with Casino Royale.
The screenplay was written by Neal Purvis and Robert Wade (who wrote all the worst Bond movies, including Royale and Solace), with additional writing by Peter Morgan (The Queen, Frost/Nixon). Adding Peter Morgan to the mix definitely adds to my theory that the next film will be more character-based. In that case, Sam Mendes and Peter Morgan working together brings some serious talent to the franchise. Mendes previously worked with Daniel Craig on Road To Perdition, which is the film I’d most readily connect to why I think he’d be a good fit for Bond. I know a lot of people aren’t too keen on Mendes’ involvement, but what do you all think?

I think he'll do well if…and this is a big if…he hires himself a top-notch 2nd unit director who handles action scenes well.

I agree, QOS action sequences were poorly constructed. Right from the opening one with Bond in the car, all the quick cuts with no purpose and poor shot angles made me feel sick.
I'm not actually a Sam Mendes fan, I like some of his stuff but think he's overrated so I'm not sure how he will handle the franchise. Perhaps Bond will have a midlife crisis and defeat his enemies by boring them to death with his "issues".

I think MGM or whoever will end up with the right to Bond trying to really go thr Bourne-route instead of moving towards a combo of new-school and old-school Bond.

Especially with no more Bourne movies to contend with now that Paul Greengrass and Matt Damon are out.

Yes, that is disappointing about the Bourne movies. I thought they were some of the best action movies I've seen and now what do we have left? If QOS is the answer, I'd rather not. Hopefully they go back to Casino Royale style.
