Top TV Shows of 2009 (DENNIS’S LIST)

Here are my top 5 television shows for 2009.  This is only for “geek” genre shows and only episodes that came out during 2009 were counted. So while a particular series (*cough* BSG) maybe a sci fi television legend, only what came out this past year was judged. Also of course only the shows I actually watched.

So here is the list of shows that I saw in 2009.

Battlestar Galactica
LOST
Heroes
Stargate Universe
FlashForward
V
Terminator SCC
Vampire Diaries
Dollhouse
Fringe
Warehouse 13
True Blood
Eastwick
Kings

Check out my list and let me know what you think.

5. Battlestar Galactica – A disappointing year, especially since it was the final season of this amazing series. This show was our top TV show for 2008, but for 2009 has fallen all the way down to #5.  While I enjoyed the series finale, a lot of the episodes that came before were not very good. Filled with exposition and silly baby mama drama (Ellen, Tigh, Six) season 4.5 was a letdown and with side story of BSG The Plan it ultimately caused the franchise more harm than good.

4. Fringe – The 2nd half of season one is when things got interesting for me with a really cool season finale.  Season 2 has picked up where season 1 has left off and when the story revolves around the main storyline of the parallel universes it’s really good, but when it’s a “Monster Of The Week” episode its only okay and reminds me of a decent X-Files ripoff. I’m hoping the show stays on the air despite lower ratings due to the move to Thursday nights.

3. Dollhouse – Though the show didn’t start off very well in its premiere season, towards the end of season 1 with the storyline focusing on Alpha and the Dollhouse itself versus Echo’s “Engagement of the Week” things got much better.  My favorite episode was Epitaph One, which unfortunately can be seen on the DVD/Blu-Ray set and it led into a very strong 2nd season that continued more on the inner workings of the Dollhouse itself and the possible ethical consequences of the technology.

2. LOST – Another really good season that started off a bit slow with the Oceanic 6 trying to get back to island, but we also had some cool time jumping with the castaways that remained on the island.  Though it wasn’t as good as season 4, ever since they decided to condense the seasons to 16 episodes and announced an ending point for the show, the series has really gotten its groove back.  Though I had mixed feelings about the season finale, it did leave us a with a cliffhanger that may change everything we know about LOST, seeing as they are not releasing any footage from the final season.

1. Terminator Sarah Connor Chronicles – Of course most of you probably have never seen this show, or at least more than a few episodes. This is unfortunate however because it’s one of best written and acted sci fi shows I’ve seen .  It flew under the radar because it focused more on character development versus constant action which the franchise is known for. The last 6 episodes of the series are some of the best sci fi television I’ve ever watched. The finale leaves off on a cliffhanger that begs to be resolved, yet FOX decided that the show was too expensive to keep.  If you haven’t seen the show I definitely recommend watching it and from the beginning episode to the last.

That's a good list. I would replace Lost and Fringe and put in Dexter and Mad Men myself, but then I never truly got into those two others shows like others have.

  2. Elizabeth Says:

I didn't watch LOST Heroes or Stargate Universe but I did watch everything else on your list. I used to watch Lost and Heroes but I gave up. I agree with your number one choice Terminator Sarah Connor Chronicles. I'm really going to miss that show. I'd put Fringe above Dollhouse simply because of the spotty performance by the lead in Dollhouse. Everyone else on the show really shines. The concept and the writing is brilliant. Galactica lost me then won me back all in the same season. I'd put Warehouse 13, FlashForward and Eastwick at the bottom of my list.

  3. ThinkHero Says:

Thanks, I've only seen a few episodes of Dexter season 1 so that wasn't something I could judge, and I haven't seen Mad Men either. I'm a big LOST fan but Fringe is a strong performer but definitely not one of my favorites of all time.

I agree about Dollhouse and the performance of the lead character however since Epitaph One, with the focus being more on the Dollhouse itself and other side characters it finally has lived up to the potential that we expected from Joss Whedon from the beginning.

I think Fringe for me would have ranked higher, if they kept episodes on track with the main storyline which I enjoy very much but we only get one out of every three episodes.

Great list. I personally would have put Lost at the top of the list, though. The way the story is unfolding as layers of mystery are pulled away truly makes it one of the best, if not the best, show of all time. The fact that events in this season tie into things that occured way back in Season 1 is a testament to just how well-thought out this show is. Season 5 was probably my second favorite only after the groundbreaking first season. I also agree with you about the disappointing finale for BSG. So many questions either remaining unanswered or resolved lazily. I think they just wrote themselves into a corner they couldn't get out of. I don't think the same thing will happen with Lost… at least, I sure hope not.

  6. ThinkHero Says:

I'm hoping LOST doesn't end its series like BSG did. If it can live up to its series pedigree then it will be my favorite sci fi show of all time. Right now I'm not sure, and hesitant because of the way BSG ended (the season of 4.5 and The Plan). There's been a few things here and there that LOST has done that I haven't liked but for the most part I think it's been great.

My favorite season is Season 1 as well, followed by Season 4.

Very nice list my friend. I agree with Arleigh on the fact that Dexter should be on that list somewhere. Haven't watched much of BSG, felt it wasn't worth watching.

  8. Elizabeth Says:

Are you and Roth going to have a top 2009 movie list?

  9. ThinkHero Says:

Hi Elizabeth, yeah we'll be doing a 2009 movie list, and hope to post it within the next couple days. I still need to watch a couple movies to see if they will make it on the list (The Road and Fantastic Fox). Let us know what you think when we post it, and what your favorite movies were.

  10. ThinkHero Says:

I haven't really watched Dexter, Roth does, so perhaps that would be on her list. BSG is definitely worth watching but season 4.5 was definitely not the strongest.

  11. FailedProtostar Says:

Good list! My top 5 would have to be:

    1) Terminator: SCC
    2) LOST
    3) Fringe
    4) V
    5) Flash Forward

Got season 2 of TSCC on DVD for Christmas and can't wait to re-watch the season.

If there were a "most improved" category, I'd rank Fringe as #1. Was only a casual viewer last season but now it's a can't miss for me.

  12. ThinkHero Says:

I got both season 1 and 2 of Terminator SCC recentyl as well and re-watched both of them. There is many things you miss the first time you watch them that you appreciate it even more after seeing it a second time.

  13. Disthron Says:

The only 2 shows on the list that I watched were Battlestar and Terminater:tSCC of those 2 shows I definatly liked Battlestar better but I really liked Terminator as well. I was kind of miffed that they canned Terminator just as it was starting to get really interesting.

You know, if I only had that picture to go by, I would never have guessed that show was called Dollhouse. It looks more like llh doouse. Maybe it's just me. XD
