Here are some great deals for my favorite HBO series, some on DVD and some on Blu Ray. I would take advantage of these deals but I already own all of them. I’ve included a short review/thoughts about each series. Let me know what you think of any of these shows, as they rank in my top tier of TV shows ever created.

Band of Brothers [Blu-ray] for $37.49

A fantastic series from start to finish, though visually it looks much like Spielberg’s Saving Private Ryan, it is superior in the story and the characters. There’s actually quite a lot of characters to follow in it, so it takes a couple episodes before you start feeling connected to them.  The acting is very good and you will see some actors in it that went on to other projects you may have seen.  This along with Generation Kill are the best wartime television series ever created and depict war through the eyes of the soldiers without an agenda against any particular person or ideology.

Rome: The Complete Series [Blu-ray] for $64.99

This also another great series from HBO, however it doesn’t rank as high with me as these other three HBO series. It’s actually not very action oriented and is more about politics and has kind of a soap opera like storyline (but in a good way).  The acting is fantastic, and the characters are full of life and its easy to get invested in them and their stories.  Another downside, is that because it was cancelled during season 2, the 2nd season is rushed and doesn’t get to develop like the 1st season.  Had the series been allowed to continue and had 3 or 4 seasons it might have been as good as the other 3 series listed here.

Deadwood: The Complete Series for $74.99

This is another fantastic series that was cut down before its time.  It’s a western, yet in some ways not a western.  While set in the time, there’s actually a lot more about the unwritten rules and politics of a growing town than it is about gunslinging.  The dialogue is great, though definitely is curse laden.  The first season is the best with the introduction of the characters and the lives they lead.  Season 2 has a few points where it kind of drags but overall is still really good. Season 3 is almost at Season 1’s quality with the introduction of a great villain however it ends on a cliffhanger that never gets resolved because the show was cancelled.

The Wire: The Complete Series for $89.99

This series has been praised by many critics as the best television show ever created, and rightfully so.  Never have I seen a show with so many characters that are intricately woven without feeling like things are contrived or forced.  It took 4 or 5 episodes before I started to realize how great this show was because when it first starts, there is no exposition and  you have to “catch up” with the characters and the storyline.  Even though it didn’t have high ratings, HBO was smart enough to let the series go on for 5 seasons and allowed it a proper ending unlike with Deadwood.
