four whole seasons??? But as I pointed out, Doctor Who is much bigger than that. Your point is well made, however. And of course, people can decide which way to go. But I think it is possible to watch Torchwood seperately from Doctor Who. In fact, since it is a far more adult orientated programme, it doesn't do it any favours to handcuff the two together. And I rather think in the future, with Doctor Who going in new directions with a new Doctor and breaking from the past 4 seasons, and Torchwood coming back in whatever format they finally decide, the gap will widen further.

Its only as complicated as you make it. Its a spinoff of Dr. Who...therefore, by diving in and watching Torchwood first, you'll be missing out on all the great character development and backstory that created the interest in the sister series, namely how Jack became immortal, the nature of his immortality, and the Face of Boe. I must respectfully disagree...considering there were at least four seasons worth of Dr. Who on Netflix Instant play last I looked. ^_^

where have you two been all your lives? Seriously, Think Hero, its a bit more complicated than liking one and so liking the other. Angel and Buffy are a case in point. the two series have a very different feel to them. With Doctor Who, the fact that there are, actually 30 series in all going back to the black and white days of 1963 is daunting. Much of the older stuff will seem odd to a first time viewer who doesn't understand how the series evolved. I would actually suggest you watch Torchwood first. there is less of it. Consider it a sort of cross between X Fils and Buffy with a British twist (although personally I hate that comparison) and don't worry about the Doctor Who connection. THEN pick up Doctor Who from 2005. And if you're sufficiently hooked, take out a second mortgage to collect all the history on DVD.

I haven't seen Dr. Who yet, but I want to give it try since everyone talks about it. Perhaps if I like Dr. Who, I'll get into Torchwood. (I still haven't finished Angel, even though I finished all 7 seasons of Buffy)

While I haven't seen Torchwood myself, I do want to see it. Its a spinoff of Dr. Who...so if you're into the new Dr. Who stuff from BBC, you should dig Torchwood pretty well, I think. The main character in the middle up there is Capt. Jack Harkness, the merc rendered immortal during the continuity of Dr. Who. Torchwood, a business of scrupulous background and questionable integrity in Dr. Who, is reopened by Harkness to do good stuff. If you like Dr. Who, you should enjoy Torchwood.
