Syfy has made a bold move and decided to release the Battlestar Galactica prequel series, Caprica pilot online for free before its broadcast debut on January 22, 20120 on their cable network.  While it might shrink the audience for the first episode, I think its a wise decision given the viewing habits of the science fiction audience, which timeshifts and watches online video more than most targeted audiences.  If people like what they see online, they will be more inclined to watch the 2nd episode and on after seeing it earlier at their own convience.  A similar strategy that seems to work is when networks post the pilot episodes for free on iTunes.  It ensures that it reachs a broader audience and can entice potential viewers to continue watching their programs.

What do you think of this strategy and/or the show?
