‘Paranormal Activity’ Director Finishes Next Project

Oren Peli has recently finished the follow-up to his mega-success, Paranormal Activity. The director is responsible for the most profitable film of all time and what some consider to be one of the scariest films of all time. Peli has already made his money, and doesn’t really have to prove himself to anyone but was Paranormal Activity the fluke I assume it is, or is there genuine talent in Peli’s “found footage” schtick? Only time will tell.
Peli wrapped production three weeks ago on his sophomore effort Area 51, another “found footage” story about three teens whose curiosity leads them to the notorious Area 51 portion of Nellis Air Force Base in the Nevada desert.bviously, hijinks will ensue, though I’m hoping this film will do more than just fast forward a tape and call it “atmosphere.”
I know a lot of people who loved Paranormal Activity and were genuinely terrified. I was bored witless and almost fell asleep three times. I felt it was a well done YouTube clip, or the Blair Witch Project with better in-camera tricks. (I think I’m the only person in the world that actually liked BWP). The only thing I liked about this movie was the lead actress, and I didn’t even really care for her until the last 1/4 of the movie. I consider [rec], the original film last year’s Quarantine was based on, more worthy of all Activity’s praise. Steeped in atmosphere, it was genuinely frightening with the most believable “first person” cast I’ve ever seen with all of it’s elements developing out of story.
For all my hatred, Area 51 has my interest peaked. but the moment I see a night-vision shot of an alien, I’m leaving the theater. How about you? Are you excited for another first person horror movie?
