Shrek is a multi-million dollar franchise, and is pretty much the only Dreamworks Animation franchise I find even slightly watchable. The first film nears Pixar-level greateness. The second is okay, and the third is just kinda there. Dreamwork is set t o wrap up the series with the fourth and final film, Shrek Forever which also happens to be the first in 3D.
The premise is the Brothers Grimm meets It’s a Wonderful Life: After rescuing a princess, getting hitched and fathering triplets, Shrek is feeling over-domesticated. To regain his ogre mojo, he strikes a deal with Rumpelstiltskin, the wee troublemaker who popped up briefly in Shrek 2 and 3. The pact goes awry and Shrek must confront what life would be like in Far Far Away if he had never existed. That translates into Donkey being forced into cart-pulling duty, fat and lazy Puss in Boots trading his sword for a pink bow and the underhanded Rumpelstiltskin ruling the kingdom.
It seems like a fitting way to end the series, by making Shrek confront everything he’d be forced to live without. Hopefully, it can make Eddie Murphy and Mike Myers even a little funny again. I’d pay ten bucks just for that. Kathy Griffin, whom I greatly consider the most talentless and annoying woman on Earth will play alongside Kristin Schaal (Flight of the Conchords, Toy Story 3), her complete polar opposite, as witches who hunt ogres. Jon Hamm of Mad Men leads an underground resistance group on the side of good . “He is the best-looking ogre you’ve ever seen,” Mitchell says.
