Mandalay Builds ‘Machine Man’

Mandalay Pictures are planning to develop a film based on Max Barry’s ongoing literary experiment, Machine Man. Story concerns a tech engineer who’s tired of going through life average and unnoticed, so he replaces parts of his body with titanium upgrades of his own design. He then discovers that he isn’t the only one with plans for his new body. Barry, who also wrote the novels Company and Jennifer Government, is one of the coolest writers out currently. I’ve only read Company, but it’s a hilarious and refreshing look at the mundance cubicle-story we’ve come to know. I’ve only heard great things about Government.

Barry is posting the novel online, one page at a time as he writes it. Suggestions from readers are integrated into the plot as the story unfolds. Vantage Books plans to publish the novel in 2011. Jennifer Government is being developed by George Clooney and Steven Soderbergh (since like, forever) and Company is also in development. I’m hoping this one actually sees the light of day.
