Watch Beckett as she reviews Jeremy Robinson’s latest book Pulse, an action/adventure story that is described as:

“Imagine a world where soldiers regenerate and continue fighting without pause, where suicide bombers live to strike again and again. This is the dream of Richard Ridley, founder of Manifold Genetics, and he has just discovered the key to eternal life: an ancient artifact buried beneath a Greek-inscribed stone in the Peruvian desert.

When Manifold steals the artifact and abducts archeologist Dr. George Pierce, United States Special Forces Delta operator, Jack Sigler, callsign King, and his “Chess Team” —Queen, Knight, Rook, Bishop and their handler, Deep Blue—give chase. Formed under special order from President Duncan, they are the best of America’s Special Forces tasked with anti-terrorism missions that take them around the world against any threat, ancient, modern and at times, inhuman. With modern weapons, tough-as-nails tactics and keen intellects, they stand alone on the brink, facing the world’s most dangerous threats.

Ridley’s plan to create unstoppable soldiers has just made him threat number one. Tension soars along with the body count as the team faces high-tech security forces, hordes of “regens”, the horrific results of Manifold’s experiments, and a resurrected mythological predator complete with regenerative abilities, seven heads and a savage appetite. The Chess Team races to save Pierce and stop Manifold before they change the face of genetics—and human history—forever.

Heart-pounding action combines with adrenaline-charged suspense in the first of Jeremy Robinson’s smart, sharp series featuring the Chess Team.”

  1. Richard Ridley Says:

I loved Pulse, and can't wait until Book 2!

  2. Stan Tremblay Says:

Great review! The action was amazing – can't wait to see how it gets amped up in INSTINCT.

  3. Jeremy Robinson Says:

And now I know you have exceptional taste, Beckett! Well done and I totoally agree with all your observations. Hope to get you an advance copy of the second book in the series and to quote you in the mass market edition of PULSE!

Ha, I just noticed you commented above. Recognize the names? Head of Manifold, Richard Ridley AND Stan Tremblay aka Rook. Heh.

  4. Walter Elly Says:

HECK YES I'm feeling this– solid review (nice job @BeckettLA), solid book – can't go wrong, loved every minute of it – worst part of the book was not having it around to read anymore once I was done with it!

  5. Beckett Says:

Haha, thanks, Walter! Agreed, when I got to the last chapter, I was like "no way this is over now..!" ;)

  6. Beckett Says:

Thanks Jeremy, I'd love to! Especially so I can read INSTINCT before the rest of the world, haha ;) And no, I didn't notice their names until you pointed it out, lol. Nice.

  7. Beckett Says:

Thanks for commenting Stan & Richard! I, too, look forward to the next Chess Team adventure.. What could they possibly get themselves into next? ;)

  8. Landfill Says:

I don't know if I'll ever read Pulse but this whole video blog book review idea is awesome. I think it would be awesome if you guys reviewed Stephen King's Dark Tower series.

  9. Beckett Says:

    Hey Landfill,
Thanks for watching and commenting! If you're up for a fun, action-y summer read, I'd definitely recommend it. But I won't hold it against you if you don't ;)
Thanks for the suggestion too – I'm glad you like the book reviews idea. If it holds up I will absolutely take it into consideration. How'd you know I love Stephen King? :-P ;)

  10. Landfill Says:

What's your favorite Stephen King novel? By the way, what other books are you currently reading that might get a video review? I, for some reason, have been reading alot of books that are being made into movies lately. I read Shutter Island over the summer while finishing up the Dark Tower series along with The Road. Can't wait to see film adaptations of those great books.

Hmm, my favorite SK novel – definitely The Shining. It is so beautifully written *and* scared the shit out of me, haha! :D

I usually like to read books that are adapted for the screen before seeing the movie, so I can compare the two more objectively, but with Hollywood putting out so few original materials now, almost everything is adapted from something else.

I'm currently not reading anything in particular (been reading a German translation of Pet Sematary on and off for awhile), so I'm open to suggestions and will do some research on what to possibly blog about next.

  13. Jeremy Robinson Says:

Hey, are you guys cool with me quoting from the review as follows?

"PULSE is fun, edge-of-your-seat action laced with questions about humanity and immortality… mixed with witty humor and even something to stimulate my intellect and love for ancient mythology." — ThinkHero.com

I have asked the publisher about getting it in the mass market edition, but have yet to hear back. I can use it on my site either way, though.

  14. Landfill Says:

I have no suggestions yet other than what I already said. I'm currently not reading anything either, I guess I got burned out on reading. I will pick up the habit once again, just not anytime soon. Maybe December.

When I do find a good book to read, I'll let you know.

Oh yeah, I'm contemplating whether or not to read Guillermo Del Toro's The Strain novel. It would be cool if you read that and gave us an insight as to what you think.

Oh and Chuck Palahniuk writes a good piece of literature.

  15. Beckett Says:

    Sure thing Jeremy, thanks! =)
