Check out Roth and Beckett’s review of Rob Zombie’s remake of Halloween 2. I personally didn’t see the movie (as I didn’t like the first one), and it sounds like that was a good idea.

They recast the kid because the original kid hit puberty a year early or something and looked too old for the part.
And the part where you said Zombie stole an idea from Halloween 4 and 5, I was thinking that was more of a nod to the old series rather than straight taking ideas. I mean the mask is the only thing that makes this a Halloween movie. The theme isn't played at all until the last scene which that theme isn't even Carpenter's theme.
I think that this film was more or less Rob Zombie going crazy and doing whatever he wanted or whatever he thought might be cool. he fulfilled his obligation to reboot the franchise with the first remake movie. The producers wanted him back but I think he got to make his true version with the sequel, hence the mommas boy angle. I'm not a fan of that angle simply because that's what Jason Vorhees is.
This movie would have been ten times better if they forgot the whole mom thing and just had him seeking some kind of revenge after Laurie denied his attempt to save her or whatever from the first film. I thought that's what they were trying to explain with the White Horse definition at the beginning, instead they just used it as an explanation as to why his dead mom has a horse with her sometimes.
Zombie style of photography and his imagery is great and he shouldn't be at fault at all for that. I liked the feel of this movie it's just that this is a Michael Myers movie. He should have saved all those ideas for something original.
The kills are one of the main reasons why anyone should watch this. When Michael stabs someone it's so fierce and the sound is so realistic, not that i would know what a stabbing would sound like, I can only imagine, that you just feel really bad for the person on the other end of the knife.
I'm not sure if I truly like this movie or not, I might have to watch it again just to make sure because it does have it's moments. I guess since this version is too far out there for most Halloween fans, they are reassured something more like the older stuff with next year's 3D edition.
Yeah, I understand recasting because the kid got too old for the part, but he could have been recast better. The new kid was just too ordinary-looking in comparison. I agree that it was visually very interesting, and there were some very nice images like Laurie in the coffin, and the mom and horse thing might have worked as a visual motif, but as it is they didn't. I also didn't understand why Laurie was seeing the same visions as Michael..? Structurally the script had problems. It was out there. I agree it was a disappointment.
Hey Beckett, thanks for the response. By the way, nice to see you in the videos for a change. But Yeah, I think since the movie was semi fast tracked into production, they didn't really have time to find another kid that actually looked like the last one. I think this new one looked more like Laurie, don't know if that was intentional, most likely, it was.
I think another reason why this movie ended up the way it did was because the script probably wasn't handled in the best way, during pre production we never heard of a rewrite or anything like that. we just heard Zombie might be back for another one, a few days later we heard he was signed on with a script and they were shooting principle photography.
Visuals were top notch and they reminded me a bit of his 1000 corpses film but in a good way. I was hoping we were going to get something similar to Devil's Rejects but what we got was fine. Not the best but fine nonetheless.
By the way great review guys, like I said, nice to see you there Beckett, hope to get more reviews from you two in the future.
Thanks – I really agree I dig his visual style and I think he can create a really nice film from an original source. He's actually signed on now to remake The Blob – so it doesn't look like he will be going in that direction. I think we are going to see Sorority Row and will be reviewing that tomorrow. Thanks again for commenting! It's really good to hear from you !
Yep, busy busy I am. I'd like to respond more to these but can't find the time sometimes. Anyway, yeah I heard his Blob remake was in development and I don't blame him for going the route of remakes but I think one day he'll find his way back to originality. Halloween 2 has not rid me of being a fan of Zombie's.
As for Sorority Row, I haven't heard too much about it so I think I'll be skipping it.
I've been helping out a website by writing a few articles. It's taken the place of top priority and my school work has taken a back seat. It's not that bad right now since the semester just started but I'm sure I'll be regretting it a bit once mid-terms roll around.
Side Note: are you guys gong to review Jennifer's Body? I just read a review over at /Film and it makes me want to watch the movie.
Yeah, they could have done with a couple of re-writes before giving it the green light. I also really want to see more original Zombie material. Haven't seen Devil's Rejects, but I will check it out now for sure.
And thanks for the shout =) Hopefully you will be seeing more of me, come back for more horror reviews w/ me and Roth. Definitely going to do Jennifer's Body.. I don't care that much for Megan Fox, but if Diablo Cody is behind it, where can you go wrong?? (*ahem* we hope)
Devil's Rejects is a sequel to House of 1000 Corpses so you should definitely watch them in order. It's fun to watch both since they are two completely different films, I'd say different genres as well.
I'll definitely be back for more horror reviews especially Jennifer's Body. I like Megan Fox and I think Diablo Cody is talented so I'm thinking this isn't one of those films that can go wrong in any way. I've heard great things and I guess in a few weeks I'll know first hand.
Rob Zombie's a competent director, but he seems stuck in a mode of making these hillbilly slasher films that always feel as though he's still trying to make HIS Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Hopefully with The Blob that'll change, but I'm expecting at least one character with a mullett, one naked girl with tattoos and piercings, and a few necrophilia jokes and

Also, Roth, your rendition of the Halloween theme song was more interesting than both of Rob Zombie's films.

I think after seeing four movies from Zombie with the same tone and characteristics, I think it's safe to say all his movies are going to have those things in it. I mean we're not going to get a heart felt love story from the guy. I'm just saying that I think that's his style of film making but with Halloween 2, he's added a touch of visuals to his work. It almost felt like a music video, something he knows more about.
I guess with the Blog remake, we are reassured that he won't have a hillbilly slasher so maybe it won't feel too much like a chansaw massacre from Texas. I do have to add though that Devil's Rejects doesn't remind me of Texas Chainsaw Massacre at all.
