Wow. Jane Espenson’s plan to become Queen Geek and take over the SyFy channel is slowly coming to fruition.
SyFy has just ordered a second season of it’s newest show, Warehouse 13, which follows two Secret Service agents who find themselves abruptly transferred to a massive, top-secret storage facility which houses every strange artifact, mysterious relic, fantastical object and supernatural souvenir ever collected by the U.S. government. It’s pretty much “Moonlighting” meets “X-Files” with this oddly placed humor that doesn’t always sit well even though the artifact cases are pretty damned interesting. Though I have to admit, Pete’s cookie fetish brings the funny and at least Myka isn’t a robot like Fringe‘s Olivia Dunham.
Now look, I don’t hate Warehouse 13 at all, but I’ve seen every episode thus far and think it has the potential to be something much better than it is. “Warehouse 13 has become the most-watched show in Syfy’s 17-year history, averaging 3.7 million viewers a week.” But why?! I can honestly think of several SyFy (wow I hate typing that) shows that were much better than Warehouse 13 over the last 17 years. What do you think?

I enjoy Warehouse 13 but in my mind it ranks behind Eureka, and that's only taking into account SyFy's current line-up. If you take their past shows into account as well, it would rank behind Battlestar Galactica and Stargate SG1 too. But I do like the show, and the characters are starting to grow on me. I got a good laugh out of watching Pete play with the sword at the beginning of this week's episode. (And I'm with you…I absolutely loathe the new "SyFy" name.)
Still need to watch latest episode. There's some entertaining moments, especially with Peter. But as a whole, I feel that it's very cookie cutter. Nevertheless we will continue to do videoblog reviews on each episode, despite the protest of Warehouse 13 lovers. Going to put up episodes 3-6 reviews up later today.

The humor is odd and off-putting, especially with the usual seriousness of the situation. Joking while standing over a dead body is a little odd. But you're right, a few entertaining moments that add up to a mediocre hour.

While I agree some of the humor in the show is odd, joking over a dead body is actually not that unusual among law enforcement. That sort of gallows humor is a coping mechanism that helps them deal with the tragedies and dark situations they encounter on a daily basis.
I never got into Eureka. It just always looked to "zany" for me. I like Warehouse 13 mostly because I like Pete and Artie, and the mythology of the artifacts. Pete is genuinely funny, though Myka is most definitely not. I don't know. I just hope they don't tread water since they've got a second season deal. All the pieces are there; it just needs smarter writing. I don't need a character to flat out say "…AND IT'S UP TO YOU TO STOP THEM." Who the hell does that?
