After hearing about the development of movies like Bazooka Joe and Candyland, it should come as no suprise that Hollywood keeps scrapping the bottom of the barrell for movie ideas, and now they have hit another low, as it is being reported that Universal is looking to make a movie based on the classic video game Asteriods.
While I am not opposed to creating video game movies, (Would love for BioShock and Halo to come out), this one to me boggles my mind. Even though Bazooka Joe and Candyland, are also desperate attempts on capitalizing on a name brand to turn into a movie, at the very least each of them has a distinct look and feel associated to them. You know that Bazooka Joe has a kid that wheres a baseball cap and an eye patch, you know that Candyland is bright in colors with huge pieces of candy as the setting.
What about Asteroids? Everything about it is generic, the name, the concept, and even the game was just a triangle that spun around shooting circles that were supposed to be asteroids.
I’m guessing they just want the name recognition from a classsic arcade game to help sell the movie to the audience. If I were them, I’d take money and invest in a Fallout movie. That’s a franchise with plenty of story, atmosphere, and has tons of potential.
Who knows, maybe 10 to 20 years from now, they can make a ThinkHero movie, soley based on our logo?
