According to THR, there will be a new Buffy movie, except Joss Whedon is currently not involved and the movie plans to be a reboot, with nothing to do with the beloved TV series. None of the supporting characters like Angel, Spike, Willow, or others will be involved.

“Buffy” creator Joss Whedon isn’t involved and it’s not set up at a studio, but Roy Lee and Doug Davison of Vertigo Entertainment are working with original movie director Fran Rubel Kuzui and her husband, Kaz Kuzui, on what is being labeled a remake or relaunch, but not a sequel or prequel.Perhaps those earlier rumors of talks with Sarah Michelle Gellar were true, they just didn’t talk to Whedon about it.
While Whedon is the person most associated with “Buffy,” Kuzui and her Kuzui Enterprises have held onto the rights since the beginning, when she discovered the “Buffy” script from then-unknown Whedon. She developed the script while her husband put together the financing to make the 1992 movie, which was released by Fox.
There’s no news about who would be starring as Buffy or who would be writing or directing the movie. However, I know that many people who love Joss Whedon and Buffy the TV Show will be extremely upset if Whedon is not involved and that it has nothing to do with the TV series.
This could end up being really bad, imagine a new Buffy movie with no Whedon, no Sarah Michelle Gellar, no connection to the TV Show, and then possibly bombing at the box office.
At least Serenity, while no box office champ, was a good movie, stayed true to the original series, and sold a bunch of DVDs.

Do it right here in the comments, people are going to be up in arms about this one. I know Roth is going to be upset. I'm really perplexed at this decision.

I wonder how long (perhaps forever) do they have the rights to a Buffy movie for? Can Joss buy the rights back? Sucks to not own your own creations, like James Cameron and Terminator. Look at George Lucas, he created an empire off of owning his own creative properties.

this movie would be a flop as i dont see many buffy fans going to watch as it has no connections to the show buffy is not buffy with out sarah michelle gellar, joss and the original cast.
I think it's absurd that people could even begin to think it would be acceptable to make a Buffy movie without Joss Whedon. Granted, like the article said the creators of the original movie still have the rights, but the movie sucked and Whedon made Buffy a household name. I wouldn't go see it!

A Buffy movie without Joss Whedon working on it and without Sarah Michelle Gellar and all the others starring in it would just be one thing: ridiculous!

I never saw the Buffy series until 10 months ago and it was because of my little sister that I started. I watched the entire series from beginning to end. So I can say I am a huge fan. If they don't have the fricken creator Joss Whedon and of course Giles, Willow and Xander, the movie will be a waste, such a waste.

meh, once Cordelia was written (on the spin-off) out with no chance at a return, the stories took a bad turn. If she could come back then I'd be mad interested in a Buffy/Angel movie. I agree that there maybe shouldn't be a reboot, but why not just do a sequel to the original film set in he original BTVS movieverse. Kristy Swanson could still kick some ass I'd bet
