IESB talked to comic book artist and entrepreneur Todd McFarlane about a Spawn Movie sequel, and he says that he has several offers on the table, and is looking to write and direct.
I once was a huge Todd McFarlane fan (moreso his artwork and entrepreneurial spirit), I like the idea of a Spawn sequel, however don’t like the prospect of him writing and directing.
I feel a sequel will benefit greatly by the special effects of today, versus when the first movie came out, however I didn’t like the somewhat cheesy nature of the first movie. With McFarlane writing and directing, I’m not sure if that trend is going to change.
When McFarlane was given his own new Spider Man series, I thought that was fantastic, until he started writing it. He had same cool concepts, but the execution was not very good, and only led to really cool artwork. Then when he left to start Image comics with the other top artists of the time, I also thought that was another great idea. Unfortunately, all the artists thought they could write as well, with the only exception of Erik Larsen (Savage Dragon), they couldn’t.
And this leads us to today, if McFarlane wants to jump in and direct ala Frank Miller, then he’s going to have to be ready to face the harsh criticism that will probably come his way. People spend years and decades of their lives crafting their directing and writing skills just to get a chance to do a big budget movie, and even some of them fail. So the idea of just jumping in, doesn’t sit well with me, especially given the track record of writing.
With that said, I am looking forward to a Spawn sequel, with some cool action/special effects and decent storyline it might be worth watching, but I won’t be super confident about the chances on that happening.
What do you think?

Like the idea of it but like you am not sure if having McF at the helm is the best idea.
Yeah, probably will be another disaster like Frank Miller and The Spirit, or even worse.

I saw an interview on you tube and mcfarlane said he's gonna make the movie more of a suspense thriller based solely around the characters surrounding spawn, leaving out any appearances of the hero himself, as well as any hollywood special effects… whoa dude, I think all that baseball is starting to mess with your head!
