Apparently SyFy Channel doesn’t want Sci-Fi Viewers…

To keep the good vibes going with sci fi fans, not only have they changed the name of their channel to something completely stupid, they also don’t want their original viewers to be watching, otherwise they wouldn’t insult sci-fi fans with this:
“The name Sci Fi has been associated with geeks and dysfunctional, antisocial boys in their basements with video games and stuff like that, as opposed to the general public and the female audience in particular,” Tim Brooks, who helped launch Sci Fi Channel, told TVWeek. “It’s somewhat cooler and better than the name ‘Science Fiction.’ But even the name Sci Fi is limiting.”
Wow, it keeps getting better and better, what will they do next? Tell us the original Star Wars is shit, and only losers watch Firefly?
Before I said this probably will be dumbest marketing move of the year, but maybe it will be for the decade.

Depressing thing is we will probably still keep watching the channel run by the guys that insult us, while doubling their audience with the new angle! That is such a naive, and poorly composed statement by their spokesperson, I sincerely hope that they will rethink their actions.

I think its a done deal, seems like they think they can broaden their audience while not alienating their current one.
Seems like they already failed on the latter.

Way to alienate their viewership – sure, I can see trying to appeal to a wider audience (it is a business after all), but that's just plain rude. Sci-Fi is limiting? Then what is *snort* "SyFy"? Besides a retarded name for a channel, that is…?

I don't think you are getting it. They will only offend geeks and dysfunctional, antisocial boys in their basements with video games and stuff like that. I don't know anyone who watches Science Fiction that resembles that description. Most of them are well rounded, socially developed, openminded, tech gurus who live in overpriced apartments with really big TV's hosting cocktail parties for an ethnically diverse group of friends.
I am not offended. Besides, everyone knows it is spelled syence fyction anyways.
