Congratulations to all the Golden Globe winners, I was rooting for Slumdog (winner of best picture drama, director, and a couple others), however as I mentioned to the ThinkHero crew a few months ago, I was disappointed at the lack of science fiction shows that should have been nominated. Here are the ThinkHero related winners -
Best Supporting Actor in Motion Picture – Heath Ledger – The Dark Knight

Best Actress Television Series – Anna Paquin -True Blood

Best Animated Feature – Wall -E

And thats it. My question is where were the nominations for Battlestar Galactica? LOST? Terminator Sarah Connor Chronicles? How does BSG, one of the best TV shows, in its best season not to even get nominated? Both BSG and LOST were praised by most of the critics. The lack of nominations is a slap in the face to Sci-Fi fans everywhere.
I know 2008 was a great year for Sci-Fi and Comic Book movies and television, probably the best year ever in terms of volume and overall quality with movies like The Dark Knight, Iron Man, and TV shows like BSG and LOST.
So as the popularity and quality grows, when will the respect come? Or is it like comedies, where they no longer are nominated for Oscars?
Even the Emmys left off the great sc-fi shows of this year. LOST won an Emmy in its first year, but nothing in sci-fi since has been nominated, and if it didn’t happen this year, perhaps it won’t happen again for awhile.
So what do you guys think? Am I overreacting? Or is there a serious lack of respect for the genre given the quality of material that was created in the past year? Please comment or even send me an email if you want.
- Dennis

No you are not overreacting. BSG gets slept on all the time. Very disappointing it didn’t even get a nomination.
I believe there was a definite lack of respect for the genre this year. I haven’t seen so much activity in Sci-fi since The X-files and I think it was represented tremendously within the last few years, but it’s being ignored.
Now looking back, it’s almost as if when they handed LOST their Emmy it was like “Okay you got your Emmy, shut up and leave us alone.”
I even think that although it is not represented during the awards season, it’s fueled shows like: Fringe, Terminator, Chuck, Eleventh Hour and others. It’s influencing others, but not being recognized.
It’s sad, and I’m starting to think it’s not going to change.
For me this past season of LOST was almost as good as the first season, so it should have been nominated at the very least. BSG was fantastic and should have been nominated and won. The only other show I could see winning over BSG, also wasn’t nominated which is the final season of The Wire.
I agree Lauren, that sci fi has been growing the last few years and can be seen on the schedules of the networks. I guess we can be appreciative of that.
Agreed. I still need to catch up with BSG, but the bit that I watched was astoundingly good. I haven’t watched much of Lost, but everyone says it’s good.
Where’s the Supernatural love? That’s an amazing show as well.
Jchampe, definitely catch up with BSG when you get the chance. How far are you? The final 10 episodes start this Friday on the Sci-Fi Channel (I finally got Sci-Fi in HD!). I haven’t seen Supernatural, though people have told me good things. What’s the premise?
I left off at the break in Season 3 I think for BSG. I’ve been meaning to catch up though.
It’s two brothers that go out seeking to defeat evil spirits and stuff. I know that premise sounds lame, but it’s actually VERY cool. I’ve only seen like a season and a half, but I plan to buy it all and sit down very soon here.
I remember that the main guy in Supernatural was in Smallville as Lana’s boyfriend for a little bit. I’ll definitely try and check it out. Always takes me a little while to catch up, just like people were always talking about Jericho, so I finally bought the DVDs and started watching.
